What to do

  • Ghusl (full ritual washing) is a confirmed Sunnah even for menstruating and postnatal women.
  • Anointing the body (not the Ihram itself) before the intention
  • Praying two rak‘ahs in general, if possible, without intending them as a specific Sunnah of Umrah.
  • Forming the intention to enter into the ritual state: “Labbayka Umrah” (Here I am for Umrah).
  • A conditional prayer (used when necessary): “O Allah, if I am prevented from completing my pilgrimage, then I am released from Ihram at the place where I am stopped.” (اللهم إن حبسني حابس فمحلي حيث حبستني)
  • Men must cover the awrah (private area) from the navel to the knees.
  • Wearing the izar (lower garment) and rida’ (upper garment), which are unstitched garments for men.

When to do it

  • At the Miqat or slightly before it (it is permissible to do so from the airplane as a precaution).
  • Who passes the miqat without Ihram: must return or offer a sacrifice.
  • There are five main Miqats, each for people coming from specific regions (Madinah, Sham/Egypt/North Africa, Najd/Ta’if, Yemen, and Iraq).
  • Travelers from Europe or America usually don’t pass a physical Miqat, so they should enter Ihram on the plane when aligning with the nearest Miqat.
  • The closest Miqat is Rabigh (Al-Juhfah), typically reached before Jeddah, so it’s recommended to enter Ihram 30–45 minutes before landing.
  • Practical steps: Perform ghusl and wear Ihram before boarding. When nearing the Miqat: make intention and start Talbiyah (“Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk”).

What to avoid

  • Cutting hair or nails
  • Using perfume after entering Ihram
  • Sexual relations and anything leading to them
  • Hunting land animals
  • For men: wearing stitched clothing and covering the head
